1. Executive summary
Operations management is based on angina the organizations work operational process
in an effective and efficient manner to achieve organizational goals this involves
managing organizations production or service process, other processes and supply
chain management, properly managed operations will boost the organizations position
in the market and will give an competitive edge to the respective business organizations
in and this will determine the sustainable growth by effectively adhering to the changes
in the market and adopting accordingly.
Garment manufacturing is a highly competitive market as there are many players in the
market as well as many opportunities for quality products, having a quality operational
management system will increase the opportunity of grabbing new market
advancements.
This report consist of how the current operation at ABC garments works and the pros
and cons of their operational strategy according to the required standards of the
industry.
In addition to identified issues this report consist of recommendations to the factory to
enhance their current operational situation by changing there operational strategies in
production, quality control and human resource management and bring it to a standard
where they can compete with current market.

2. Introduction to the organization
ABC Garments was established in the year 1992 and they are of specialized in
readymade garments. ABC Garments (PVT) Ltd is located in export processing zone in
katunayake and this is a BOI approved garment factory in Sri Lanka which is
specialized in Casual Wears & Baby Garments whom caters to more than 15 countries
with well reputed brand names such as Tommy Hilfiger and Gap.

ABC garments production line is of world renowned brand standards and they are in
collaboration with one of the local textile leaders. A Group of Companies in China is
backing up this small garment factory by giving them state of the art cutting edge
technologies and machinery take on the competition and create competitive advantage.
Even though ABC garments does not pursuit on new innovations or making research
and developments, perfect after sales service to there or not even responsive
excellency to their clients‟ needs and wants which are mandatory features to gain
competitive advantage in garment manufacturing sector and without all that still ABC
garments has made tremendous success and have being able to achieve success and
this fortunate situation has made them to triple their production within 10 years‟ time of
their start of operations as a garment manufacturer.
Its main shareholder is recognized as one of the world's largest circular knitted fabric
manufacturers and has long been a driving force in the global market through its
vertically integrated operations in spinning, knitting, dyeing, printing and finishing. The
Group's product range also includes dyed yarns, sewing threads and garments. As a
major Casual Wears, Lingerie & Baby Garments manufacturers in over 15 countries that
supply to internationally renowned retail brands, its sales reached US$73million in the
financial year 2011.
The company‟s in house production facilities include the Leuctra CAD/CAM System,
which aids in designing and making markers is a valuable asset to group of factories.
Computerized, Hand & machine embroidery, smocking, Permanent Pleating are some
of them which some are not in use as they are not having necessary human resources.
But they are moving towards the next century with great expectations and a continued
in search for commitment to excellence. Total Group employees „strength is
approximately 350. Sample Room and Factory has a dedicated and well experienced
workforce of 230 employees. Total monthly capacity is nearly 3500 pcs in their full
capacity.

There are 4 Nos. Embroidery Machines and 150 other machines the production of ABC
Garments has been improving day by day with its experienced co-owner who was one
of the pioneers in the industry and experienced sewing operator staff whose also well
experienced in the industry who joined with the owner to start this new organization.
They have worked histories almost as old as the factory. All quality controllers are also
been handpicked by the owner from his previous organization, enabling them to work
close.
ABC Garments is a well-established garment factory as the owner is well tied up with
the main Chinese share holder and is the proud winners of the Presidential Export
Awards in the years 1997 three years after their operations started. In 1997 & 1998 they
have being Awarded the export certificate of merit under the presidential export award
scheme in recognition of our performance in garment exports to USA. Europe.
3. Operations management
Operations management stand for mainly on Organizing, Planning and supervisory
control of production of goods or services to a user which may not be the end user.
Operations management delivery is mainly focused on turning the input in to quality
outputs in an efficient manner. Inputs can be anything that being use to make an
outcome such as materials, machinery, technology or/and all human resources.
Before the word operations management they called it production management as this
was origin in manufacturing environments. This was started in history in the time of
division of labor in production arena, production management concepts rapidly changed
during the beginning of industrial revolution in 18th century, which led revolution of
finding interchangeability of parts.
Operations management made an huge leap with Henry Ford‟s introduction of assembly
lines to production environment, with the changes made by henry ford production
management became widely spoken topic in and that made various changes in
industries by introducing new technologies such as Assembly lines, separate line
production, piece assembly, customization, production planning, inventory & warehouse
management , logistic management (Delivery),these new concepts brings life by new
approaches made to Operations management in the era it has being called as
Production management.
4. Critical Assessment of the operations strategy of the company
Like most of the manufacturing organizations garment manufacturing is also an
assemble line production process which uses many raw materials such as fabric,
buttons, threads, Velcro, etc. they also having many production types as well as
different volumes different technologies, supply chain mechanisms and different
markets ,as this being very labor intense industry this can be varied from small scale
family oriented businesses to large scale multinational organizations.
