In Andy Kirk’s book ‘Data Visualization: A Handbook for Data Driven Design’, he has narrated a few
stories to tell us about different techniques of data representation. Storytelling is quite prominent form
to narrate data visualization and data representation. “Data storytelling” can be even used for
infographics and dashboards, etc. It is a simple way to talk about the data and create visually appealing
data charts. Data storytelling involves three key elements; data, visuals, and narratives. It is an effective
and structured approach to get insights on data.
Andy Kirk has discussed about mainly below data representation techniques through data storytelling:
Line Chart: Line chart plots the data in order and then joins them with a line. As per data storytelling in
the book, line chart shows the way a series of values have changed over a period of time (through
temporal plane). The vertical Y-axis indicates the numeric values and horizontal x-axis shows related
terms.
Example: Increased average in cost of living across cities in North America in the last 20 years
Advantages:
A very commonly used way of data representation.
Simple yet effective way of data representation.
It shows all the data points.
It can show multiple data sets.
