1. Inside Sports Management:
This video talked a lot about leadership and how an effective leader reacts in different situations.
Sports is a huge part of people’s lives when growing up. Watching it on tv and going to the
events impacts people to move towards this career and interest. For some people it was hard to
know where to start when it came to these types of jobs. Most of them were introduced by
someone close to them. The experience of the game and what brought people together was
what inspired many of them. A lot of the time it only took figuring out who they were and what
they wanted to do. This gave them the realization when it came to choosing this career path.
Doing something they cared about and having passion lead them to the places they are today.
It’s important to make an impact in each individual fan this will give them a good experience. You
must also make decision that the public will not always like or understand. Its all about how you
handle the situation at hand. That is what people will look at and react to. Leadership is
important. Going from good to great is not an easy thing. You must put all the pieces together.
You have to know what it feels like to fail in order to recognize success. The experience of going
through you builds your character. This video gave a lot of great details when it comes to the
inside facts about sports management.
2. Mintzbergs managerial roles:
What do managers actually do? It’s important to know what we are training each manager for.
Its important to know what they actually do. Some basic manager functions can be far too
vague. This is when it comes to on the job. Several managers from around the world were asked
to keep detailed notes on what they did throughout the day. This will give and insight to what
they actually do. This gives us a much more accurate picture to what a manager actually does on
a day to day basis. Mintzberg found that managers fill three distinct roles in the organization.
Interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles. These three ultimately share the
same common role. A manager is someone who is in charge of an organization or group. Formal
authority is important because this promotes their status. Their status is what leads the various
roles of being interpersonal- figure head, leader, and liaison. Managers should have good
communication. The second role is informational- Monitor, disseminator, and spokes person.
Again, the manager must be a good communicator. The third is the decisional role- entrepreneur,
disturbance handler, resource allocator, and negotiator. All of these rolls must be sequenced
with each other. The Impact of managerial roles acting together is greater than the sum of the
individual roles. A manager may be stronger in one roll than the other roles. However, the
manager must have good communication skills everything points to that conclusion.
