The Second World War from 1939 to 1945 lead to many changes in the domestic United
States. During this time period women were an essential part in winning the war, as well as
maintaining the economy. Industrialization flourished which helped begin another technological
and scientific revolution. This war created more jobs, a better economy, an increase in
population and all around growth and prosperity for the American people. But while things for
most American citizens were better than ever, the minorities such as the black and immigrants
were still treated very unfairly. The second world war lead to many changes within America in
political, social and economic ways.
When President Roosevelt announced that America was indeed going to interfere in this
world crisis, the United States begun preparations for war. Shortly after his proclamation, a draft
had begun were “all men between the ages of 21 and 35 were registered. In doing so he acted
with the promptness which the situation demands”. (Document 1). Because of the magnitude of
the war, and the new technological advances such as “atomic energy, passenger planes,
helicopters improved gasoline and new industrial war machinery” (Document 7), the United
States needed to acquire the most powerful naval and military it had ever needed. Because the
younger generation of men were being drafted for the war, most of their jobs would be left
empty. This was the perfect time for women to step up and show that they should be treated
equally to men. Women stepped up and took over factory jobs, farms, industrial work and were
essential to keeping the American economy vital. As seen in Document 4, ads like Rosie the
Riveter were used as propaganda to persuade women to helping the workforce. The role
women took on during this time was an essential part in winning the war.
While it is thought that because blacks were allowed to fight in the Second World War,
they would be treated better back in America, but it was evidently the opposite
