Independent Cinema was an emerging style of filmmaking in the 1990’s due to the
changes coming to Hollywood. Following the blockbuster era of big budget movies with
expensive advertising, many independent filmmakers began using the cinema to tell stories of
their personal lives. “Do the Right Thing,” director by Spike Lee, highlights many key
characteristics of a typical independent film from these times. Released in 1989, it was one of
the original independent films. Telling the story of a black community standing up for the
acknowledgement within the pizza place that served their community, “Do the Right Thing”
addressed many controversial topics that were original considered too “taboo” for cinema and
often was avoided in film making to avoid outraging the audience. Independent films, without
the support of major studios, often had lower budgets because they were financed
