Module 12.1 in your text introduces you to the structural and functional features of the brain and the spinal cord
and looks at the process of nervous system development. By the end of the module, you should be able to do the

1. Describe the structure and function of each major area of the brain.
2. Describe the five developmental regions of the brain, and identify the major areas of the adult brain that
arise from each region.

Brain | The organ of the central nervous system the performs multiple integrative functions.
Cerebrum | The two large, superior structures of the brain that are responsible for higher mental
functions, control of movement, and interpretation of sensations.
Diencephalon | The central core of the brain; made up of the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, and
subthalamus.
Cerebellum | The posteroinferior portion of the brain; responsible for regulating ongoing movement and
the correction of motor error.
Brainstem | The most inferior part of the brain; responsible for automatic’ subconscious functions.
Spinal cord | The organ of the central nervous system that connects the brain with the peripheral
nervous system and preforms certain integrative functions.
