Du Bois—Excerpt from The Souls of Black Folk Du Bois says that there is a question on the minds of every white person who speaks to him, but no one asks the question openly, and he rarely speaks about it. What is this question? What does this question mean? Why do you think people don’t ask it openly? Why do you think Du Bois chooses not to talk about it directly with white people? What does Du Bois mean when he says he “reduce[s] the boiling to a simmer”? What emotions is he referring to? What causes these emotions?
