• Healthy People 2030: Social Determinants of Health There are cyclical connections between health outcomes and socioeconomic status, education, and social & environmental infrastructure (Hinote & Wasserman, 2017). These factors influence a community’s availability of resources to meet daily needs such as housing and access to healthy foods, access to educational, economic, and job opportunities, overall access to health care services, and other physical determinants (Healthy People [HP], 2020). Accordingly, socioeconomic status has major implications on a person’s quality and longevity of life (Edelman et al., 2017). These social determinants of health are separated into five key areas: economic stability, education, health & health care, neighborhood & built environment, and social & community context (HP, 2020). Healthy People 2030 highlights the importance of these key areas of the social determinants of health by identifying six core objectives and one research objective in their “Proposed Objectives for Inclusion” (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM], 2020).
