General A&P Anatomical Terms Portfolio
A learning portfolio is designed to guide you through each week’s lesson and topic. It has directions to help you
master the course content, has incorporated lab activities that utilize Visible Body, and covers every associated
course competency. This course uses Bloom’s taxonomic levels so that you can gradually work your way up to
the highest level of comprehension. When you are done building these portfolios, you can save them to
reference in future classes. Let’s begin!
Competency Covered: Apply descriptive, anatomical, physiological, and directional terminology to the human
body and its organization
Criteria: Your performance will be successful when:
• graphic, written or oral product/process includes anatomical terminology for the anatomical positions
used
• graphic, written or oral product/process includes directional terminology
• graphic, written or oral product/process portrays the describes characteristics and sequences of
homeostatic mechanisms
• graphic, written or oral product/process describes location, structure, and function of body cavities and
linings
• graphic, written or oral product identifies body planes, sections, and regions
• graphic, written or oral product accurately represents homeostatic mechanisms
Learning Objectives
• Distinguish between anatomy and physiology.
• Describe the anatomical position.
• Describe the three major planes of the body or of an organ.
• Identify the major body cavities and their subdivisions.
• Identify the serous membranes that line the walls and cover the organs of each body cavity and the fluid
found inside each cavity.
• Describe two ways to subdivide the abdominal region.
• Identify the quadrants of the abdominopelvic cavity.
• Identify the nine abdominal regions.
• Describe the axial and appendicular regions of the body and their subdivisions.
• Use correct directional terms in the study of anatomy and physiology.
• Describe the location of specific body organs.
• Match locating terms with the correct descriptions.
• Match body positions with the correct descriptions.
• Define terms related to organization of the human body.
• Define examples of homeostasis, negative and positive feedback systems.
• Provide examples of homeostasis, negative and positive feedback systems.
Directions: If you are enrolled in a traditional face-to-face course or in a blended course, you must print this
entire document and bring it to class to work on. If you are enrolled in an online course, you should download
this document, type your answers in the boxes, save the completed document to your computer, and upload it to
the assignment tab before the due date. You may use Visible Body, the course textbook, and/or internet
resources to answer all of the questions. Your instructor will provide further instructions on due dates and how
to submit your portfolios for grading.

Level 2: Understand in Lab
This level requires you to identify, describe, discuss, or explain key components in the body. The lab activities
below are designed to aid your understanding of the course content. If you enrolled in a traditional face-to-face
course or in a blended course, you must print this entire document, bring it to lab, and work on it during the lab
period. If you enrolled in an online course, you should download this document, type your answers in the boxes,
save the completed document to your computer, and upload it to the assignment tab before the due date. Some
of the activities will be completed entirely in the Visible Body interface. Other activities are provided in this
document. All activities must be submitted by the deadline as indicated in your syllabus.
Anatomical Terms Lab-Part 1: Orientation to Visible Body
• Your instructor will have a link to the Visible Body page. Click on the link and enter the code that you
purchased through Gateway’s bookstore.
• Set up your Visible Body account. If you have smart devices, download the Visible Body apps so that
you can access them wherever you go.
• Complete the ‘Getting Started’ quiz. This is a graded quiz under the folder titled “Getting Started with
Visible Body Courseware and Apps.”
• Review the eBooks under ‘The Human Body: An Orientation’ tab. You can download these and save
them to your computer for future reference.
• Email your instructor if you have difficulties accessing Visible Body.
• Answer the questions below.
Question Answer
Distinguish between anatomy and physiology.
The difference between anatomy
and physiology is that anatomy is
the study of the human structure
and physiology is the study of how it
functions.
Describe anatomical position.
the positioning of the body when
it is standing upright and facing
forward with each arm hanging
on either side of the body, and
the palms facing forward.
What is the difference between the axial and
appendicular body regions?
Your axial skeleton is made up of
the bones in your head, neck, back
and chest. Your appendicular
skeleton is made up of everything
else — the bones that attach
(append) to your axial skeleton.
