1. Please, define ‘foreign policy’ and three main goals of U.S. foreign policy. (4

points)

Security, prosperity, and the creation of a better world are the three most

prominent goals of American foreign policy. Security, the protection of

America's interests and citizens, is a perennial concern, but America has tried

to achieve security in different ways throughout its long history.

2. Please, describe how U.S. foreign policy evolved over time (i.e. what were

some stages and orientations in U.S. foreign policy in the 1800s compared to

1900s and compared to today?) (5 points)

Back then there were a lot of wars with different nations. now US has no

equals to military and others are rivals and some are against the US

3. When the U.S. entered WWII, it marked the end of America’s isolationism.

Please, describe post-WWII period in U.S. foreign policy (in your answer,

please, use terms such as ‘Truman doctrine’, ‘cold war’, ‘containment and

deterrence’). (5 points)

During the 18th and 19th centuries, U.S. security was guided by the principle of

isolationism. After U.S. involvement in WWI, in the 1920s-1930s isolationism

returned the era of U.S. confrontation with the Soviet Union (USSR) is known as the

Cold War. President Truman doctrine: advocated that the U.S. aid nations threatened

by the Soviet Union and allies. Deterrence and containment is a policy designed to

curtail the political and military expansion of a hostile power

4. Explain what ‘arms race’ means and what role did it play in U.S. foreign

policy during the cold war? Also, what is a ‘mutually assured destruction’

and how does it figure into deterrence? (4 points)
