Course Information
An examination of the ways religious themes, symbols, icons, and language are used in expressions of
popular culture. An introduction to the study of the relationship between religion and popular culture
using cultural studies perspectives. Selected examples of contemporary or past popular culture will be
studied.
Course Goals and Learning Outcomes
If you engage with course material and participate in lectures and tutorials, by the end of this course you
should be able to:
*outline the history of the study of popular culture
*outline the history of the study of religion
*critically engage with issues around gender, race, and power in popular cultural interactions
with religion
*improve your critical academic writing and reading skills
