OVERALL PERSPECTIVE Chechnya is the subject of Anthony Marra's novel, in which the torn country experiences several devastating episodes (specifically during the events of the Caucasian war in Chechnya, Russia). Despite the story's horrific circumstances, it demonstrates courage, optimism, and a sense of humor. The story's principal themes are warfare, brutality, death, and human trafficking, all of which are explored in depth. The story is titled "Chechnya" because the location in which the battle took place is named after the country in which it took place. During the Caucasian War, in Chechnya, now known as the Chechen Republic, Muslim Chechens rose in resistance to the Russian invasion and fought back against Russian occupation. Imam Shamil was in charge of the group. II. CHARACTER There are four characters presented in the Chechnya story of Anthony Marra: First is Sonia, a surgeon in Chechen hospital, whom Akhmed talked to when he asked for help to take care of Havaa.
