In Vitro Cell Models
Cell Culture
o Three Materials
1. Vessel
Ex: culture dish or flask
2. Nutrient Media
Solution containing substances essential for cell
survival and growth
Includes: serum, amino acids, glucose, salts and
growth factors
3. Incubator
To house cells at ideal temp, humidity level, and
oxygen/carbon dioxide levels
o Primary Cell Culture
1. Cells that have been extracted directly from tissue or
organism
o Cell Line
1. Subcultures of cells from primary cell culture
2. Primary cells will multiply to a point in which they occupy
all of the space in dish (confluency) and thus are
transferred to new dish so they can continue to grow
3. Finite Cell Lines
