Recall, activated FX (FXa) is a critical coagulation factor as it catalyzes the
conversion of prothrombin into thrombin, which is needed to generate the
insoluble fibrin that ultimately forms a clot.
FX can be converted to FXa by both the intrinsic tenase complex and the
extrinsic tenase complex. Both of these complexes consist of an enzyme, a
cofactor, and a zymogen substrate. Understanding the intrinsic and extrinsic
complexes and which molecules are involved will allow you to understand
what happens in individuals deficient in any of these factors.
