1. What does the term “high-risk pregnancy” mean?
According to Durham, A high-risk pregnancy is one that threatens the health
or life of the mother or her fetus. Pregnancy places additional physical and
emotional stress on a women’s body. Some women are at a higher risk for
this if they have existing health conditions such as obesity, hypertension and
being over the maternal age of pregnancy (35).
2. Choose 1 factor that places a woman at risk from the list below
and briefly describe a, b, and c for each of your
choices: Hypertension
(a.) Pathophysiology
Hypertension is known as a blood pressure reading that is >140mmHg/
>90mmHg. Hypertension puts the mother at risk for preeclampsia and
eventually eclampsia which leads to seizures.
(b.) Management
The management of preeclampsia is delivery of the baby. The baby will
receive corticosteroids to help with fetal lung maturity once the baby is
delivered, most of the time they will be delivered preterm. The mother will be
assessed whether the blood pressure is still elevated after delivery. If that is
the case, she will be placed on antihypertensives.
