Self Reflection.
MGMT5050 Teams, Ethics and Competitive Advantage has changed my perspective on
overseas learning, especially English-Australian education style and dispelled my
confusions and suspicions in Master of Commerce (Finance) learning experience. In this
course, students such as international learners were provided considerable opportunities
to practice multitudinous case analysis exercises, team projects and self-review activities.
These learning assignments have urged me to think with a multi-tier approach when I
study, think, and work with other classmates. The required reading material, Achieving
Academic Excellence: A Self-Regulatory Perspective written by Barry J. Zimmerman
elucidates the significance of self-regulation, self-efficiency and self-motivation in
academia. The Case Analysis Development Workshops (CAWs) and The Skills
Development Workshops (SDWs) integrated with the ideas stated in Zimmerman’s paper
have inspired my minds that the individual’s positive action and willpower are the
essential factor to achieve academic success.
I chose my Master of Commerce because of my interest in the financial industry’s
capacity to give me the sense of achievement – I like money but I would prefer to explore
the mystery behind the money, and operating or managing money could also be an art.
Having a chance to study in a world-renowned university like UNSW seems to be an easy
approach for gaining a fulfilling professional career, but I was sceptical about my own
learning appearance and study methods which I used to do before I learn MGMT5050. At
the very beginning, I relatively suspected the compulsory core course MGMT5050 that
gave me a “milk-and-water” sense, because the specialization of my master degree is
finance which is not likely to concentrate on management. However, it is difficult to
imagine how I could deal with the whole academic-learning issue without the guide of
MGMT5050. After a semester, consequently, it is proved that this course could be the
most beneficial course because it taught me a correct and systematic learning method
including self-regulation.
