PATHOLOGY

Pathologist > someone who identifies disease by examining fluids, tissues & cells removed from
the body > provide info to clinician
Pathogenesis > How the disease develops (mechanisms)
DISEASE PARADIGM
Fill in the paradigm of disease for each one
ETIOLOGY
Etiology (cause) of disease:
Genetic vs. environmental (risk factors)
Has either one or the other
Known (gene mutation) vs. unknown (risk factors)
Sometimes its known or unknown
Complexity of etiology of a disease:
Hemophilia > monogenic disorder
Atherosclerosis, VTE, cancer, neurodegenerative
Multigenetic with environmental risk factors
No reliable predictive biomarkers (we don’t know who’s going to develop what)
