Exploring the Genetics of Eye Color in Fruit Flies Multi-week Team Lab Notebook (TLN)

This entire investigation will occur over 5 weeks of lab (see lab schedule on OAKS). Each week your team will complete a portion of the lab, in addition to the Independent Projects lab you are working on that week. You will be recording your hypotheses, predictions, results and analysis in your TLN for this lab over this entire period. Make sure that everyone on the team will have access to the TLN each week just in case someone is absent. You can do this by saving an updated copy of the TLN each week and make sure to provide everyone on the team a backup copy of the TLN via email or using a file sharing app such as OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive.

Week 1 – Why different colored eyes?

What might be some possible explanations for why traits like eye color seem to vary along a continuum? (5)

- Eye color varies along the different types of fruit flies. For instance, a wild fruit fly has a tendency to have red

colored eyes.

- Random variation

- Natural slection

Examine the fruit flies in each of the 3 cultures available (wild, white & sepia). If all of these flies in each culture are true breeding, what must be true of their genotypes? (2)

- Fruit flies are from either pure or true breeding lines.

Record the phenotypes of the male and female flies used for the parental cross for your team? ( Be sure to label this clearly on Parental cross culture vial along with your team name. Place the culture vial on the side lab bench in your lab section’s marked off area.)

Our female fruit flies have red eyes and the male fruit flies have sepia eyes.

You will not submit this TLN to the OAKS dropbox until the final week of this multi-week lab. So, make sure that everyone on the team has a copy of this TLN before you leave lab today.
