Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to understand the behavior of the molecular structure of
polymers when subjected to mechanical loading. We are also comparing the mechanical properties of
polymer with those of plain-carbon steel and aluminum obtained in the first experiment.
Equipment:
INSTRON testing machine with environmental chamber
Materials:
Nylon
Acrylic
Experimental Procedure:
1. For the Acrylic specimen in the environmental chamber at 60oC, similar procedures as
experiment 1 should be followed from steps 1-4.
2. Next, the same procedure for the PMMA specimen at the room must be repeated.
3. After that, we compared the two curves each specimen at different temperature.
4. Step 2 of this experiment was repeated with slower displacement rate. We analyzed the
effects of strain rate on the yield strength and ultimate strength of the polymers.
5. The entire experiment was repeated using different strain rates for Nylon at room
temperature.
6. Finally, we compared the mechanical properties of polymers with those of metals in
experiment 1.
