Abstract
By graphing the electronic spectrum of I2 using a spectrophotometer, a Birge-Sponer plot
was able to be graphed, and from there, electronic parameters and the Morse potential graph
were able to be derived from it. In the excited state, the vibrational frequency (ωe’),
anharmonicity constant (xe’), dissociation energy (De’), and the equilibrium dissociation energy
(D0’) were calculated to be 132.7 ± 1.3 cm-1, 0.00758 ± 0.00007 cm-1, 43.8 x 102 ± 1.0 x 102 cm-1,
and 43.1 x 102 ± 1.0 x 102 cm-1, respectively. The convergence limit (E*) was calculated to be
19876 ± 2 cm-1. The Morse potential constant (β) was calculated to be 19.5 ± 0.5 cm-1. The
calculated variables are not all within a standard deviation of the literature values, but they are
relatively close to them.
