Mental health is one of the leading problems in today's society. Mental health affects

youth. This is asserted by Florian Arendt (2018), who writes that suicide is responsible for the

second most deaths among people between the ages of 15 and 29. In the last decade, there has

been an apparent decline in mental health among teens and young adults worldwide. Recent

reports paint a worrying picture of the mental health status of youths. One such report is a study

published in 2019 by the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. According to the report, depression

rates among kids aged 14-17 years went up by sixty percent between 2009 and 2017 (Twenge et

al., 2019). These reports show a crop of young people in anguish and battling mental health

issues. In recent times, the wave of social media has swept the globe and grown in acceptance

among the youth. Social media websites such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube

have turned traditional communication and interaction. Social media allows an interactive and

instantaneous sharing of information. Social media usage has dramatically gone up in the last

decade as people have embraced it as a fundamental tool of communication and sharing ideas

and opinions. This has been mostly contributed to by the broad access to smartphones enjoyed by

people around the world today. The rise and acceptance of social media have coincided with the

decline of mental health among teens and young adults. According to researchers, there is a

growing wealth of evidence suggesting an association between heavy social media usage and

poor mental health outcomes among young adults and teens. Despite the advantages associated

with it, social media has contributed significantly to the decline of youths' mental health while

also influencing suicide-related behavior
