The link between social media and teen suicide

The second leading cause of death among the youths of between 10 and 24 years is suicide.

There are various causes of suicidal cases among the young people. Identifying the risk factors is

difficult. Some of the factors which may put the youths under the risk of committing suicides

include the personal characteristics, mental disorders, family factors, contagion-imitation,

specific life events-traits and previous suicide attempts among others. Personal characteristics

indicate people who have certain features which make them susceptible for the idea of

committing suicide. Although the suicidal ideation may happen gradually, the implementation of

the may be impulsively, unexpected and suddenly. The age of adolescents is marked by a time

where children have difficulties in managing their emotions and making their own decisions.

Some of the suicidal cases experienced among the teenagers are due to family context matters.

This may be due the nature of the parents, siblings among other people. Moreover, families

which have a person who abusing substances will lead to suicidal thoughts. The increased use of

social media among the teenagers has seen higher cases of teenagers’ suicidal cases.

The main central cause of suicide among the teens is the mental disorder which is mostly

depression. Most of these factors pressurize young children towards committing suicide in order

for them to escape the mental disorder affecting them. The factors mentioned above are the

central causes of mental suicidal thoughts. Mentally ill teenagers are mostly affected by

depression. They have increased fear, anxiety and stress. Some of the factors that cause

depression among the young generation include the use of social media, sexual orientation, and

status with peer and school performance. Social media has played a huge role in influencing

people in their suicidal thoughts. There are groups of scholars who feel that social media has

caused the increased suicidal cases. However, there are others who view social media as an

instrumental tool in fighting mental problems and ultimately reducing suicidal thoughts.

According to them, there are several strategies that should be laid down to achieve the fight

against these thoughts as a teenager. However, it is crucial to note that he same social media is

vital in spreading this information. Therefore, the purpose of this research project will be to
