ECONHEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS OF MENTAL HEALTH 2
Introduction
Health policy analysis is a process through which particular stakeholders or policymakers
are presented with solutions towards social problems and public health issues, which have been
identified and evaluated, to assist individuals/ groups/ organizations make an informed choice
that upholds the stakeholders' values, practical and political realities. Mental health is mainly an
area of interest, which has not been regarded with the seriousness it deserves. It is a significant
determinant of the level of health and well-being, quality of life, economic development
outcomes, and social stability. Globally, addressing mental health issues through well-formulated
policies is vital in attaining developments, mitigating poverty, and enhancing health.
Problem statement
On a global scale, approximately one out of every four people will suffer mental health
conditions before dying. It is estimated that close to one million annual deaths are due to suicide.
Among the population of young people, it is the third leading cause of death. According to WHO
(2010), mental health problems contribute significantly to the major causes of disability in highand low-income countries. WH
