Examples of Irony Explanation of the irony How the example of irony is symbolic or how it functions in the story Fortunato’s name Fortunato means fortunate. This is ironic because in the story, Fortunato is actually the victim of the story and gets himself into difficult circumstances. Fortunato’s costume His costume gives off happy feelings because he is dressed in his carnival attire. This is ironic because he is actually a fool. He get into a situation that he no longer get himself out of and isn’t so happy. That eventually leads to his death bed. Montresor’s name (in French, “my treasure”) His names mean treasure but in the story the only treasure he seems to get is to seek revenge on Fortunato. In the story Fortunato hurt Montresor’s and now he wants to get him back. When Fortunato becomes trapped that was perfect timing for Montresor to get his “treasure, which is to kill Fortunato. Montresor’s coat of arms and family motto This is ironic because they actually mean “nobody harms me without being punished”. This is symbolic to what Montresor has planned for Fortunato’s death.
