• The deadline for this project is Thursday 28th March 2024.

• Upload your Project Report individually to Moodle link given below.

• According to BP Policy, feedback will be provided to students within 10 working days of submissions.

• Students are required to apply for a remark of any contested grading within 4 working days of receiving back their work.

• Though the assessment is group work (group project) students must submit project final report individually.

The tasks within this assignment satisfy the Learning Outcomes of the course according to the table below:

Deliverables

The following deliverables must be submitted by the project deadline:

1- The design is in MS Word or pdf format.

2- The circuit design and simulation results using Multisim alongside with the simulation files (must be submitted)

3- A project report (15 pages only) explaining the theoretical circuit design and the reasoning behind your design choices with the simulation results.

4- VIVA VOCE

5- The circuit PCB implementation (Optional/Bonus).

Aim:

Aim of this project is to do research on the theory and best practice around the design, construction, and testing of modern types of

DC motor control methods using Power Electronics applied/applicable to low voltage DC Motors which will help you design,

construct, simulate, implement, test your design to control speed of the assigned DC motor.

Students are required to apply their theoretical and practical knowledge to demonstrate their own choice and submit a full report

using standard on their work, and findings.

Instructions:

• Study the principles of DC Motor Control methods (Traditional and Modern).

• Your design is to be fed from a single phase, 240V 50Hz ac source, the design must allow speed control at 3 different speeds

(Low, Medium and High).

• Familiarize yourself with the concept of Modern DC motor control methods.

• Reversal of direction of rotation can be considered as an extra feature (Bonus)

• PCB design and assembly as finished product is considered as an extra feature (Bonus).

• Conduct Risk Assessment your scheduled lab. Session (Open Lab. Outside regular session), before attending the laboratory

and arrange with lab. assistant prior visiting the lab. If practical work will be carried out (Bonus).

• Prepare detailed procedures for the experiments you will be conducting along with clear circuit diagrams if student wishes to

conduct practical work (Bonus).

• Make note of everything when doing your experiments (seek support / guidance of lab. Assistant). (Bonus)

• Explain each element/component in your design and its impact on the overall performance.

• Provide the mathematical equations and formulas used to determine own design parameters.

• Present your findings in a clear and organized manner, including diagrams, equations, and explanations.

• Discuss any assumptions made during the analysis and their potential impact on the accuracy.

• Include references to credible sources used for research and analysis.

Objectives:

Group Work

• Students need to form their own groups (Maximum 5 students per group)

• (Each group will be given different DC Motor and each group will be responsible for picking their DC Motor and to extract

motor ratings and data from motor’s nameplate.

• Each group will be responsible to collect components, instruments, devices, and consumable materials. (Bonus)

• Each group will be responsible for conducting Risk Assessment and obtain lab. Assistant approval before conducting the

experiments. (Risk Assessment Sheet available in Machine Lab. 20B.163). (Bonus)

• Each group will be responsible for arranging with the lab. Assistance to find available slot to conduct the experiments as

students are not allowed to experiment on (Single/Three phase source 240/415V) without supervision. (Bonus)

• Each group will need to prepare clear procedures and diagrams for own design to be carried-out before coming to the

laboratory. (Bonus)

• Each group of students must come to polytechnic campus to perform the practical parts and collects the data that to be used

in their report. (Bonus)

• Each group must submit a comprehensive report using standard format using the guidance given along with this brief.

• Students may design single phase ac to dc controlled to obtain the variable DC ripple free output to control speed of the

assigned dc motor.

• Note: This assessment is designed to test your understanding of Modern types/methods DC Motor control theory, circuit

analysis, and your ability to apply them to practical scenarios. Ensure that you demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the

topic and provide a clear and logical analysis of own design.

Individual Work

• A student must demonstrate his/her individual contributions and understanding of the project before a panel of tutor(s) in the

form of a viva-voce test and experimental demonstrations.

• A Student must be able to demonstrate own practical skills to their capability of conducting the experiments. (Bonus)

• A Student must be able to demonstrate own theoretical knowledge and answer tutor (questions)

• A student may be required to prepare Power Point PPT for the VIVA.

• A student may be requested to operate own design using suitable simulation package eg. NI Multisim to tutor/s.

The report must contain:

• A project report must be written on the work performed throughout this project. Below is a set of guidelines for the project

report:

• Fully completed Bahrain Polytechnic Cover Sheet

• Use standard format to prepare your report (e.g. Microsoft Word)

• Ensure that your report is well-structured, coherent, and includes all the required elements mentioned in the instructions

below

• Abstract –you may NOT COPY the abstract from this project descriptor. The abstract should be no more than 75 words and

should define the project and provide a brief discussion of the work that is presented in the rest of the document.

• Table of Contents (TOC) including page numbers

• Table of Figures (Clear screen shots or snapshots for all measurements) taken from simulation software Multisim/Matlab.

• Table of Figures (Clear photos for all measurements taken as evidence of conducting the experiments) (Bonus)

• Table of Tables (if any).

• Objectives – What are you hoping to achieve in this project. You may present your objectives in bullet point format.

• Introduction – Should contain a general discussion.

• Motor data/specifications – (clear photo)

• Provide a clearly labelled diagram of the circuit, along with clear photo for each test setup while conducting the experiments.

• Provide detailed description of the testing procedures performed. (Bonus)

• Include any equations, or formulas and step by step calculations used to support your findings.

• The evaluation of circuit parameters

• All measured results may be tabulated clearly along with (clear photos of measured and simulated results) taken from own

experiments. (Bonus)

• Include MATLAB codes/Multisim files or any other simulation software/package in appendices.

• Discussion Section – Contains information regarding the information obtained, comparisons between the experimental,

simulated, and calculated values obtained, you may also include a discussion on how this project could be improved, any

difficulties you encountered, what you liked about the project.
