• ASSESSING THE PROBLEM Assessing the Problem Part 1 Hypertension affects approximately 108 million adults in the United States (CDC, 2020). By 2025, it is estimated that more than 1.5 billion people will have hypertension worldwide (Li et al., 2015 p.1). Despite the increased prevalence of hypertension, many patients struggle with disease management. Of the estimated 108 million adults in the United States diagnosed with hypertension, only 1 in 4 have their disease under control (CDC, 2020). Hypertension can affect the quality of care provided, the patient’s safety, and the costs incurred by the patient. Quality of Care Worldwide, 13% of deaths are due to hypertension (Khatib et al., 2014 p.1). Lack of detection, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension are leading risk factors for uncontrolled hypertension (Khatib et al., 2014 p.1).
