• DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ESSAY 2 America has been an evolving melting pots that continues to grow due to functionalism. In the last 50 years, there has been sociological change due to deviances such as, what was once considered deviant behavior that has been re-evaluated and accepted and acceptable behavior that is now considered deviant, which continues as a revolving door throughout the growth of America, shaping a society edging to a eutopia for all. Cannabis was once considered deviant but is now used in many medicinal products that serve to be very affective and No-Knock warrants are being barred for the safety of the community and the civil officers due to the recent unjustifiable killings of people of color and past recollections. Cyberloafing, which is now considered deviant, will be more helpful in the workplace for employees’ morale and evidence that Terry Stops should be considered deviant because they are mostly used as an excuse for racial profiling. Cannabis also known as weed, has not always been considered an illegal controlled substance. The history of cannabis dates to before the 1900’s when Americans were using it for medicinal purposes. In order to understand why cannabis eventually became legal, the history of it needs to be spoken of. Burnett, M. & Reiman, A. (2014) researched, In the early 1900’s during the Mexican Revolution, a lot of Mexicans immigrated to the states where they brought their culture, customs and language. Cannabis was already in the states, but the Mexican called it “marihuana.” In an effort to raise fears in the public about these new citizens, the media spread false claims about the Mexicans to include their disruptive behavior because of “marihuana,” even though cannabis was already in a lot of peoples medicines then (Burnett, M. & Reiman, A., 2014). Marijuana was the excuse used to search, detain, and deport Mexican immigrants.
