1. Jen claims that culture influences an individual to a certain extent that affects every individual,
specifically Asian Americans, in a multitude of ways. They compare & contrast of Jeremy Lin &
Jen’s brother Bob’s lives in order to display the different manners in which culture played into their
upbringing. Jeremy Lin is a professional athlete whose dreams are openly supported by his
parents, for they rooted for him on the sidelines. On the other hand, Bob’s parents were focused
on trying to get him to go to medical school & pursue a career in the medical field. The difference
between the two parenting style is that one conforms to a racial stereotype, while the other is on
the “westernized” side. Even so, they both derive from Asian culture, which emphasizes its
complexity & malleability.
