1. The “Cigarette Box” cartoon was made when people began doing research into cigarettes
and realizing the immense amount of damage they do to a person’s body. The cartoon satirizes
this by using imagery of cigarettes and coffin, saying that a cigarette carton can be a person’s
coffin. Under the coffin there is the Surgeon General’s report which verified the hazards of
smoking cigarettes. Elements of satire used include symbolism and labeling. The symbolism in
the coffin as the cigarette box, because while clearly cigarettes do not come in a coffin shaped
box, it represents the coffin that a person will be in if they continue smoking. The labeling is the
Surgeon General’s report, to signify that cigarettes have been proven to be dangerous and it’s
not just rumors. This cartoon was effective because it played personally into people who smoke,
backed their argument up with facts, but still had a simple concept that anyone could
understand.
