What are the distinct characteristics of Ren’s leadership and management style? Having had military background for more than a decade, he implemented an army-like approach for Huawei’s management style. He ran his company with hard-and-fast rules, clear-cut goals, brave spirit and high efficiency. He actively promoted and rewarded dedication. Furthermore, he also focuses on remuneration system and makes sure that the reward the employees receive will be equivalent to the effort they put in. This system provides a high incentive to encourage employees to have more passion to work. He also gives his employees a “sense of belonging” to the company by establishing a unique virtual restricted stock” system where employees can obtain a part of Huawei’s stock dividend. This also increased their dedication for Huawei. In terms of performance assessment, he sets clear and hard rules to give an assessment result; this motivates employees to work harder to receive the rewards as a salary rise. In addition, Ren also sees the importance of R&D in his industry and allocates 45% of 170,000 employees for this purpose. Not only that, his R&D coincides with customer satisfaction and consumer centricity.
