Correlational Analysis: Exam Anxiety
Description
This fictional data set, "Exam Anxiety", provides questionnaire scores by students prior to an exam (the
variables are anxiety, preparedness, and grade).
Variables:
Code - Participant's identification number.
Revise - Time spent studying for the exam (in hours).
Exam - Performance in the exam (percentages).
Anxiety - Anxiety prior to the exam as measured by the Exam Anxiety Questionnaire.
Gender - Participant's gender (Male, Female).
This example JASP file demonstrates the use of the Pearson correlation coefficient. Specifically, we will
investigate how the following variables correlate with each other:
time spent in studying for the exam and performance in the exam
time spent in studying for the exam and anxiety prior to the exam
anxiety prior the exam and performance in the exam
Research Questions
a) Is there a relationship between time spent in studying for the exam and performance in the exam?
b) Is there a relationship between time spent in studying for the exam and anxiety prior to the exam?
c) Is there a relationship between anxiety prior to the exam and performance in the exam?
Null Hypothesis
a) There is no correlation between time spent in studying for the exam and performance in the exam
(r = 0).
b) There is no correlation between time spent in studying for the exam and anxiety prior to the exam
(r=0).
c) There is no correlation between anxiety prior to the exam and performance in the exam (r=0).
Alternative Hypothesis
a) There is a correlation between time spent in studying for the exam and performance in the exam
(r ≠ 0).
b) There is a correlation between time spent in studying for the exam and performance in the exam
(r ≠ 0).
c) There is a correlation between anxiety prior to the exam and performance in the exam (r ≠ 0).
