(Worth 40% of Total Course Assessment) Competency Assessment: Complete a range of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) critical tasks using CREO 7.0. The tasks for assessment include: • Modelling parts • Creating assemblies and exploded views • Utilise the mechanism feature • Produce detailed drawings which are in accordance with AS1100 Background: For as long as man has made things, drawings have been the central descriptive media to enable that work. Technical sketching is the singular skill that unifies the nucleation of the design and manufacture processes and its importance to engineers cannot be overstated. As critical as technical sketching is, it was traditionally supported, as the next step with more formal Technical Drawing. The evolution of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools has effectively rendered technical drawing (though not sketching) antiquated. Early CAD systems (1980’s) were little more than electronic drawing boards, and such systems still exist as entry level tools. Modern ‘high end’ CAE systems offer the user a substantive depth and breadth of analysis tools and modelling capacity that their mastery of can become an entire career direction for some engineers. At an undergraduate level, the CAE tools you will explore in this and other Mechanical Engineering courses will enable you a greater clarity of visualisation over any technical sketch, allow design exploration and optimisation, and give you the prospect of creating production ready drawings. Like all substantial life skills, proficiency in the use of CAE and the generation of production ready drawings and sketches take time, patience and self-reflection to succeed. Instructions: Each student is required to complete an individual competency assessment, detailed within this document. There are nine (9) elements which form the basis of the CREO portfolio. Each element is to be submitted and the results recorded on Blackboard. The actions used and evidence gained to assess competency (listed in Appendix A) are recorded against each criteria. Upon completion of each competency task, each student must have their competency assessed weekly by their Computer Lab Leader, where this can be completed either online or in person during the computer lab session. Once the CREO Portfolio has been completed (all nine (9) competency tasks) students must sign and date this document (on the last page) and upload to the submission link which is available on Blackboard.
