This module was designed and written with you in mind. Primarily, its scope is to develop your skill as a beginning creative writer in using figures of speech and your specific experiences to evoke meaningful responses from your readers. While going through this module, you are expected to: 1. identify the different figures of speech; 2. recognize figures of speech as they appear in excerpts from selected literary texts; and 3. write a short love song using some figures of speech. Are you ready? Imagery Imagery includes figurative and metaphorical language to improve the reader’s experience through their senses (Literary Terms, 2015). A poetic diction is marked by the use of figures of speech, rhyming words, and other devices (LiteraryDevices Editors, 2013). The use of figures of speech or figurative language is the key to creative writing. A beginning creative writer must meaningfully master how to use these as they are essential in the crafting of a masterpiece. What is a figure of speech? A figure of speech is another literary device used by creative writers (poets, fictionists, playwrights) to evoke meaningful responses from their readers. It is a word or phrase that uses a figurative language. A figurative language has other meaning other than its literal meaning; it has a figurative meaning. Figurative means deviating from the literal use of words. Literal means taking the words in their usual or most basic sense or their dictionary meaning. Figurative language has a connotative meaning while literal language has a denotative meaning. Figures of speech depend on implied or suggested meaning. They are not meant to be taken literally. There is a meaning other than its literal meaning and this other meaning is its real meaning.
