2 Executive summary
This project involved the design and calculations to construct a crane that is able to lift a 0.5kg weight
from pedestal A to pedestal B. The aim of this task was to design a lifting device which is designed to a
factor of safety of 1 to 2 electromechanically and 2 to 3 structurally meaning the device must fail if given
a 1 or 1.5kg weight to lift.
Initially, individual components were designed separately. Team members brainstormed and
integrated ideas of the final design. Sketches were created and discussions were held through zoom
meetings, regarding the proposed function of the components and the overall device.
Following developments of these designs, some components were virtually constructed both
individually and in combination with other components. After the creation of the final design, the crane
was modified to improve the efficiency and overall functionality. Some components such as the design of
the truss and the base structure were redesigned to help the final design be most efficient in terms of
material use.
As such, the performance of the device during formal assessment is expected to be successful and
complete all the requirements of the project brief.

4 Introduction
The fundamental aim of this EGB111 project is to design and construct a lifting device
(crane) that is able to move an object that ideally weighs 0.5 kg from a 50 mm pedestal (A)
onto a higher 100 mm pedestal (B), refer to appendix 1 and 2. The design must also be
structurally balanced and stable, so it does not tip when operating. Electrical energy must be
its initial source and therefore, cannot use pre-stored electrical energy or pre-compressed
springs. Furthermore, the design must achieve additional criterion and requirements to satisfy
the client.
Hence, this written design report will be outlining the entirety of the design concept. This will
cover further analyses of the three main engineering disciplines; civil (structural), mechanical
and electrical. This report will also include all calculations, diagrams, concepts, methodology
that is used and implemented for the designed crane to function effectively whilst adhering to
the design objectives.
