The Dis-ease of Disease From an Eidetic Lens
Toomb’s topic is illness-as-lived, or the eidetic approach to illness. The author analyzes this
through discussing some eidetic features of illness such as a loss of wholeness, loss of bodily integrity, loss
of certainty and control, and loss of the familiar world. This is connected to an overall loss of bodily
autonomy: Autonomy in its simplest form can be defined as having control over ones own body. In the
case of illness this autonomy is lost as the dis-ease of disease includes an umbrella of losses of control
where the patient is being held hostage by the illness.
