Gary is a 45 year male who works a 'desk job' and is very time poor. As such his daily physical activity has reduced considerably. Gary recently completed his yearly health check at his local GP and he's now classified as overweight and his blood glucose levels are modestly elevated, indicating a pre-diabetes state. In consultation with his GP, Gary has now undertaken an exercise program, which consists of cycling five days per week at a moderate intensity (~60%VO2 maximum) for 45 min - 1 h per session.
a. Outline the changes that would occur in Gary's muscles that would occur in response to a single exercise session and two months after the commencement of his training program. Focus on molecular adaptations, substrate storage and metabolic capacities.
b. What changes would happen with respect to substrate metabolism during exercise when comparing his first training session to his last training session? (i.e., assuming he is riding at the same speed on exactly the same route)
