XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language)is a global standard for tagging and reporting
financial information in a computer readable format. The SEC adopted XBRL in 2011 and now
requires all its filers to tag each piece of financial data that appears in its mandatory financial
statements so thatit is machine readable andeasier tocollect anduse.In this project you will be
using XBRL tagged data from financial statements to analyze banks’ investment data. This project
requires your understanding of “Chapter 12 Investments”, Excel, and XBRL.
Goal of the project:
Using XBRL, identify which banks had thehighestincrease in held-to-maturity securities
as a proportion of total securities. Analyze your findings and explain why these banks
experienceda changein their classifications ofinvestment securities by searching financial
statements, news articles, or other sources.
Data:
1. You will use financial data as disclosed by thefirms in their financial statementsXBRL
tags. The raw data comes fromthe SEC: https://www.sec.gov/dera/data/financial-
statement-data-sets However, thecompletedataset is too large to open in Excel.
