CHAPTER I
PROJECT BACKGROUND
In the Philippines, poultry raising is quite common but most of it is taken care of in
a cage the broiler chickens since it requires less space compared to free-range chicken. In
Region VIII, the chicken and broiler inventories from 2010 to 2011 increased by 11.50
percent and 19.58 percent, respectively. However, the value of egg production of chickens
and ducks slightly slows down from 2007 to 2009 (Department of Agriculture, 2012).
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (2019), there was a decline in chicken
population from April 2018 to April 2019 where all provinces contributed to the decline in
chicken population except for Biliran and Northern Samar, which posted increases of 4.7
percent and 0.8 percent, respectively. The increased population of chicken population in
Norther Samar would imply that chicken and egg production are increasingly in demand
and would also affect their market production. As such Northern Samar registered the
growth at 0.5 percent increase of broiler chickens from April 2018 to 2019. According to
the Philippine Statistics Authority (2019), Layer chickens posted the highest growth of
17.2 percent, from April 2018 to April 2019, Northern Samar posted the highest increase in
layer chicken population at 65.2 percent, followed by Leyte at 22.2 percent. According to
the acquired data, the livestock and poultry especially the chicken and broiler are in high
demand in fact it only increased and exploring other areas of production and marketing
through free-range chicken production would become more sensible
