Because the string forms different “resonant frequencies”. These different peaks correspond to the standing waves formed by the 1st harmonic, 2nd harmonic, 3rd harmonic, etc. Hence, despite the same tension, a variety of different frequencies will be produced. The “fundamental frequency” is the one that is observable by the human listener.
