We will use the IOLab unit to measure the direction and magnitudes of magnetic fields, and perform some simple demonstrations related to magnetism. You will need a refrigerator magnet or a similar small magnet. If you do not have one, you may use your smartphone, which may contain a magnet. 1. Background measurements. Open the IOLab software. Power on your IOLab unit, and select ‘Magnetometer’. Rotate the IOLab unit around and measure the magnetic field. (See below). Record a few seconds worth of data. Pay attention to the x, y, and z directions on your IOLab. Make sure that IOLab unit has been calibrated. If you have skipped this step, or if it has been a long time since this has happened, click Reset, Remote 1 (on the right-hand side of the icon menu), under the gear icon, select the sub-menu Calibration, and “Accel – magn – gyro” under Remote 1. The graph should change as you rotated the IOLab unit. Try to reproduce a graph with some indication of the magnetic field changing when you move the unit. Include a picture of your screen including a piece of paper with your name, date, and lab number on it below before continuing.
