Objectives
For this lab, four pieces of metal undergo weld tests and the hardness values of the base
metal and the area around the welds are recorded. The objective of this lab is to identify what
happens to the microstructure and properties of each of the metals as the metal is heated past a
certain point. Also, the objective is to identify the microstructure and properties inside of the
HAZ (heat-affected zone) as the weld cools. The focus of this lab is to compare and comment on
the hardness values observed in the fusion zone (FZ) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) from all the
weld data given.
Results
In this lab experiment, a steel weld and an aluminum weld were done, and the data was
recorded before and after each metal was welded. In figure 1, the base metals and their
mechanical properties were recorded presenting the type of material, yield strength, and hardness
value. In figure 2, the welds performed were recorded presenting what metal was welded with
what filler metal and the figure also demonstrates what type of weld was done on each of the
four metal bases. In addition to these two figures, figure 3 and figure 4 demonstrate a more indepth at the initial conditions of the of each of the base metals and welding materials while also
recording the final values of the hardness after the welding is completed. Each figure presents the
initial base metal hardness, base metal tensile strength, and the hardness values after the welding
as the distance from the fusion zone increases. In figure 4, two base metals were used, however,
there are two types of filler wired used for each of the base metals resulting in two sets of
hardness values for each base metal. In figure 3, however, there a different welding method was
used resulting in no filler wire needed to be used. Instead, the electrode type was recorded for
each base metal. One things that was observed from figure 3 and 4 was that two different
welding methods were used because of the base metals being aluminum and steel.
