Experiment A: Perfectly Inelastic Collisions
1. Methods
This lab will examine momentum with the observations of colliding gliders, in this
particular experiment perfectly inelastic collision will be explored by using a wax cup and a pin
are for the connection of the two gliders during collision. Photogate is used as a motion detection
technology through LoggerPro that gives the total time it takes for the flag to pass through the
gate. the time is recorded of the time that is is blocked. Two gliders were placed on track that is
made near frictionless due to an air force similar to an air hockey table. The cart that was pushed
was loaded with extra weight distributed on each side to create glider 1. M large and 2. m small .
The moving glider will collide and stick to the stationary glider and the velocity of the moving
glider and the two gliders stick together after collision will be measured. The final velocity of
two carts will be compared to the velocities in a perfectly inelastic collision given the initial
velocity and masses of the carts.
