Foundations of Drawing I Visual Communication Design 1311A-02 & 03 Spring 2021 CSU Pomona Mondays Jan 26 -May 10 Instructor: Joyce Hesselgrave Schedule: Zoom: 736 789 5241 1311A-02 MW 12-3 1311A-03 MW 3-6 Email: [email protected] Google Drive: Section 2: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hE-Ar8paR_XvpPfu5BkupuxbVGxIGePb Section 3: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WXrGXcE8iJxSmTqACQE68pD3A5796mM2 Course Study of drawing with emphasis on depictive concepts, materials, tools, and techniques. Description: Basic mechanical drawing techniques and interpretations are introduced. Emphasis on development of perceptual concepts and methods. We will work on depictive concepts, meaning we will draw from life, which is the timehonored method of learning to draw. We will do objects, still life studies, landscapes, urban landscapes, and portraiture. I will teach you techniques of visually analyzing your subject. The stronger your analytical powers are, the easier it will be for you to draw your subject. Drawing from life helps you become a better artist. Learning Students will learn proper usage of the basic drawing materials such as graphite, charcoal, Expectations ink and pastel. Techniques using these materials will be explored. Students will study and learn how to depict still life, landscapes, perspective, and portraits in a realistic drawing manner. This class will learn various construction of forms, light logic, texture, and compositional drawing arrangement techniques. Students will learn and use drawing vocabulary during discussions and critiques. Course Please log onto Blackboard for syllabus, announcements, grades and Blackboard instructional readers, and also instructional video demonstrations Online We are online all semester, and I carefully planned the drawing activities to be fun and interesting Class projects using lots of different materials. I will be teaching you technique, of course, but I hope Method you get creative with our endeavors, as well! Everything you need from my teaching will be on Blackboard. You will only need to gather the right supplies and materials. For those new to drawing, it’s a great idea to simply buy the custom portfolio package & pick it up at Blick’s Fullerton. I’ve ordered smaller paper sizes, as you will be working at home with limited space. I’ll meet you Mondays on Zoom to talk, and I will have handouts and videos to show as well. You will have questions, so feel free to email me anytime. Attendance: • Attendance is crucial to understanding lessons and demonstrations of concepts to be learned in class. Students are expected to meet during the Zoom Meeting every Monday. • Repeated absences will lower score. Zoom attendance is required. • Students are responsible for all information covered in classes and in Blackboard. Assessment: Projects/Critiques • Students will participate in hands-on
