Sestric 1 Kyla Sestric Hardin 3rd British Literature II February 1, 2019 Man’s Unusual Way Satire can either be used as a literary device to vaguely describe a piece of literature as satirical and or be classified as a specific genre of literature. As a genre of literature, satire can be characterized by its consistent and sustained satirical attacks on various targets. Satire is associated with its use of irony, wit, sarcasm, and ridicule in order to criticize something or someone. The goal of satire is to display the vice or follies in humans and is often used to achieve political or social change. There are three classifications of satire however, the two most common forms of satire are Juvenalian and Horatian (Tikeka 2018). These forms of satires have the same objective, presenting the foolishness of man, but use drastically different methods of doing so. A Juvenalian satire is named after a first century AD roman satirist named Juvenal, who attacked and brilliantly denounced government officials. He regarded their opinions not just as wrong, but instead as evil. Thus, Juvenalian satires can be described as a bitter and harsh criticism of vice and error, often filled with personal hate and anger (Britannica 1998).
