Edgar Castaneda Edna James English 015-06 13 November 2018 When you read “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass, and “Literacy Behind Bars” you find many similarities exist between Malcolm X’s and Douglass’ essays that put forward their distinctive ways of learning how to read and write. The unusual setting establishes the first common experience the two men had to undergo. Similarities and differences can be found in Malcolm X and Douglass. The situations of both Malcolm X and Douglass are similar because they belonged to a marginalized race who were denied the rights to education. They were also sad and dissatisfied with their respective educational situations and did all they could do to get education. They were also very determined in learning how to read. The difference between the two was that Douglass’s situation was more difficult than that of Malcolm X as he was prohibited from reading and had to sneak around when he tried to learn. Whereas Malcolm X had all the books he needed, and the time. Although it is possible to educate oneself without traditional schooling, self-education is not a simple process.
