Directions: ​There are two parts to this assignment. Follow the directions for each part and complete
the graphic organizer below.
Part 1—​Review ​ question 1 from the 2005 AP English Language and Composition Exam.​ Answer
the following questions in complete sentences:
1. What is the historical context of the passage?
a. The passage was written before the 19th century, before the abolishment of savlery.
2. What ideas and rhetorical strategies are similar between Jefferson’s ​Declaration​ and
Stewart’s lecture?
a. Both Jefferson's declaration and Stewarts lecture have the same idea, they both wish
for freedom, Jefferson and Stewart both use emotion in their tone and the use of
diction to get their point across.
3. What is Stewart’s purpose?
a. Stewarts purpose was to tell people about the unfair treatment of servants.
4. What is the exam prompt asking the student to do?
a. The prompt asks the students to analyze the rhetorical devices that maria used to
build her statement and position.
Part 2—​Review the ​sample student responses for question 1​ and answer the following:
1. Student sample 1A scored a 6, 1B scored a 4, and 1C scored a 2. What are the strengths
and weaknesses of each essay that account for the differences in scores?
a. In in 1A they used a thesis for their paragraph, while 1B didn’t really explain much in
their writing, and the same goes for 1C. 1B and 1C did not provide any claims, they
just talked about the passage without any insight. 1A’s strength is a thesis while 1B
and 1C’s weakness is not having a thesis.
2. What is the thesis for sample 1A? What claims are used to defend the thesis?
a. “By ethically using figurative language, diction, and her point of view, stewart is
successful in describing and calling an end to the plight of African Americans.”
3. How did the writers of 1A and 1B choose to organize and structure their responses? Is that
chosen method of development effective or should another have been used? If so, why?
a. Both writers 1A and 1B gather rhetorical strategies, quotes, and figurative language
to strengthen their response, this is effective because the more evidence they have,
it helps build their claim and strengthens it to develop Maria’s position.
