In the case of Eve, based on the clinical evaluation, it appears she is suffering from
preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that causes blurry vision (Bunce, 2020),
high blood pressure, abdominal pain, high proteinuria levels and edema of the limbs which are
all consistent with the symptoms that eve is experiencing (Monsanto1, 2021). It can also progress
to eclampsia which is characterized by the patient experiencing seizures (Monsanto, 2020).
Although it is more common in the second trimester it also occurs in the third trimester.
The most effective drug treatment for preeclampsia is magnesium sulfate that acts as an
anti-seizure medication and vasodilator, as well as a modest anti-inflammatory (Eiland, 2012).
This increases blood flow to the placenta reducing placental ischemia (insufficient blood flow to
placental bed) (Monsanto, 2021), reducing the likelihood of eclampsia and its associated
symptoms (Eiland, 2012). Other anti-inflammatory drugs may be used like aspirin to counteract
the inflammatory reaction associated with preeclampsia (Eiland, 2012). Delivery of
fetus/placenta is the only cure and must occur to reduce the risk to the mother but must also be
managed to allow adequate time for the fetus to develop which stresses the importance of early
