After trial and error Adam and Eve are finally pregnant but have returned to the doctor
with concerns during Eve’s final trimester. Eve could be experiencing any number of
complications occurring in the final stages of pregnancy such as: antepartum hemorrhage,
orientation of the child, or preeclampsia.
Antepartum hemorrhage is bleeding that occurs following twenty weeks of gestation
which exists in two forms known as abruptio placenta and placenta previa. Abruptio placenta is
the premature separation of the placenta from the uterus resulting in hemorrhage. Placenta previa
occurs when the placenta partially or totally covers the mother’s cervix obstructing the birth
canal preventing normal delivery. Antepartum hemorrhage results in bleeding in both situations,
ruling this diagnosis out for Eve. Another concern could be the positioning of the child as it
should be headfirst towards the birthing canal. This avoids “breech” position which is unsafe for
both mother and child. Eve, however, was experiencing symptoms such as gastric pain, visual
disturbances and edema of the limbs and after medical examination was found to have
abnormally high blood pressure and a urine test confirming proteinuria. These factors point to the
diagnosis of preeclampsia which is a poorly understood condition in pregnant women that leads
to several reactions including: hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count, and
swelling of extremities. Preeclampsia is often associated with impaired placentation,
