The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow studies race in America from the Civil War to the Civil
Rights Movement. It analyzes the era, which began with Southern governments' opposition to
providing formerly enslaved people equal privileges with whites after the Civil War.
1. Black women and men were given a lot of hope towards the conclusion of the War and
during Reconstruction, where the first episode picks up. However, whites in the South
could adopt laws that effectively divided and disenfranchised African Americans. These
laws were enforced through brutality and terror as Northerners abandoned black efforts to
gain land, political and civil rights, and legal due process. This period of Reconstruction
ended in 1876. Black leaders like protester Benjamin, anti-lynching campaigner Ida B.
Wells, and the rising star of Booker T. Washington are profiled in "Promises Betrayed,"
which chronicles the black response.
2. An African-American man could not extend his hand to a white man in the act of social
equality since doing so would be seen as a sign of subservience. The rule was that people
of different races couldn't share a meal. Some separation was required at communal
meals, with whites being served first. Since white people found public displays of
affection, such as kissing, between blacks to be offensive, laws were passed prohibiting
such displays. Black people were expected to sit in the back of a car or truck driven by a
white person. Whenever a white car approached a junction, the other cars had to yield to
it.
3. After the Civil War ended in 1865, some states established "black codes" that severely
curtailed Black people's rights. These rules limited blacks' employment prospects after
being employed. Black people's property rights vary by state. The Restoration Act of
