• NSG 3300 Case Study Analysis 2 Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which little to no insulin is produced from the pancreas (Banasik et al, 2018, pg 281). About 1 in every 300 to 600 children and adolescents develop diabetes in their life and can occur at any age, typically peaking around the ages of 2, 4 to 6 as well as between 10 to 14 years of age (Banasik et al, 2018, pg 281). This case study is about a 13-year-old adolescent girl who was admitted and diagnosed two days ago to the pediatric unit with Type 1 diabetes. Throughout this analysis I will discuss the pathology of type 1 diabetes, implications for self-care, patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration needed to provide patient-centered care. Pathophysiology of the Disease Type 1 diabetes is caused as a result of an autoimmune attack on the beta cells of the pancreas. It is characterized by a complete lack of insulin; limiting glucose from entering the muscle and adipose tissue. Therefore, the production of glucose by the liver is no longer resisted by insulin, which causes an overproduction stimulating plasma glucose levels to rise (Banasik et al, 2018, pg 282). Once the maximum capacity is reached in the kidneys, glucose is spilled into the urine eventually resulting in hypovolemia. This is noted by the classic symptoms of diabetes, increase thirst (polydipsia), increased urination (polyuria) and increased hunger (polyphagia) (Banasik et al, 2018, pg 283). The prevalence of type 1 diabetes is noted that Caucasian populations are more susceptible to the disease than are African American, Hispanic, Asian and Native American populations. For those children younger than 15 years of age, there is little noted of gender difference, however, more men than women have been diagnosed within the populations (Banasik et al, 2018, pg 281).
